Oliver's School Advent Garden

Went to Oliver's school yesterday to watch his class go to the Advent Garden -- a beautifully set up spiral or evergreen boughs, seashells, and stars. As the kids came into the room, which was instructed to be quiet so the children could experience the ceremony in quiet reflection (keeping in mind that these are 3-6 year olds) the teacher was singing about bells ringing for the coming of advent.

Each child had made a candle and placed it in an apple that was the holder for the candle. In the center of the spiral was a hollowed out gem stone with a candle that was lit by a lady who came in dressed in simple sarong. All of the ceremony was done while a liar was being played. Each child was handed his unlit candle and walked to the center of the spiral and lit their candle returning through the spiral to find a star to place their lit candle on to "light" the way for others.

I was very proud of how Oliver, who can be full of energy and words, handled himself during the entire program. When given his candle he walked (a little more briskly than the others) through the spiral, lit his candle, walked back to find a star and then returned to his seat to sit quietly. He is growing up too fast.

What fun it was to participate in something with Oliver. Thanks for doing a great job, Mormor was very proud of you.
